B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell, whose personal popularity has dropped to nine per cent in one recent poll, announced he would step down Wednesday.

The former Vancouver mayor has been B.C. premier since 2001 when his Liberals won 77 of 79 seats in the provincial legislature, ending a decade of NDP government in the province. Mr. Campbell was re-elected with diminishing majorities in 2005 and 2009.
