Canadians will get a fresh look at the country's battered post-recession finances when Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government opens its books in the next few days.

Although advertised in advance as a dry account of Ottawa's fiscal position, the economic update will expose the dramatic political dilemma facing the Conservatives as they look ahead to the next budget in March.
