Tories Continue To Take Heat For Deficit

Scott Brison, Member of Parliament for Kings-Hants, Nova Scotia, continued the Liberal led criticism of the Conservative government's spending habits during question period today.

The Conservatives have been feeling the heat as of late for a number of reasons, but Canada's enormous deficit which stands at over $55 billion dollars currently, is likely to have long term legs.  A new poll released by Nanos Research indicates that public opinion on the health of the economy has dropped for the past three quarters, something which should be concerning for Conservatives.

After last weeks holiday break, during which Finance Minister Jim Flaherty gave the government's economic update, the opposition parties have been hitting them on questionable spending ever since.  Today, Scott Brison revisited the 'big three', an estimated $10 billion on the proposed prison expansion, $16 billion on new F35 aircraft, and the estimated $1 billion on hosting the G20, all of which have seemed to find some resonance with the public.

For its part, the government has been sticking to its plan of winding down its stimulus plan.  If only the deficit was entirely attributable to the stimulus that would be a fine plan, but it's not.  As you will see from the video below, the government is being mum on what plans it has to balance the budget, although neither does the opposition, but they all say they have a plan.

Either way, the austerity debate will be here in Canada before long and we'll have to decide what kind of Canada we want to live in.
