Rand Paul, the Tea Party-backed Republican nominee for the Senate, sent a thank-you note on Saturday to Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, a father of the Tea Party movement, who was coming to a rally for him in northern Kentucky.

"I smile when I think of what we can do together in the Senate if the people send me," Mr. Paul wrote.
