Waiting For Superman
While people like Rand Paul, Republican Senate candidate in Kentucky, push for the abolition of the Department of Education, others are striving to fix a broken system.
We are now officially members of the global economy and the only way to compete in it is to be more innovative, and that means a superior education. Unfortunately, the long slow process of erosion caused by anti-education religious groups, as well as extreme libertarian notions of liberty, have led to a system in which one third of high school students don't graduate. Those are some scary numbers, but not a burden the United States must carry alone as there have been reports in Quebec that upwards of 40% of male high school students don't graduate.
The President and his Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan have been very bold about committing to improving education practices across the country. They implemented the Race to the Top program which rewarded states who applied and met strict guidelines to improve their education scores. The previous program run under the Bush administration called No Child Left Behind, actually had the effect of lowering standards for schools because funds were handed out for minimum requirements.
Now comes a film that highlights the struggle going on in America's school systems and what a brave few are trying to do to make education better and give it the important position it not only deserves, but needs to be in if the next generation are to meet the challenges of the future.
