UPDATE: Obama Heads To Missouri And Nevada To Talk Jobs
President Obama began a two day campaign swing for Democrats Robin Carnahan running for the Senate in Missouri, and Senate Majority leader Harry Reid running for his fifth term in Nevada.
His first stop along the way was Kansas City, Missouri where he visited a company that makes electric trucks to service urban areas and which received stimulus funds to expand. Smith Electric Vehicles was one of the promising companies targetted by the stimulus package in which the investment paid off with the creation of fifty new jobs at the Kansas City location with plans to expand to other urban centres across the country.
Beyond selling the stimulus package which, according to the independent and nonpartisan CBO, has saved or created upwards of 2.5 million jobs, the President continued to focus like a laser on the economy. With conflicting indicators as to how fast the economic recovery is proceeding and threats to Democratic majorities in the House and perhaps even the Senate, visits by the President are being welcomed.
Sam Stein over at the Huffington Post wrote a piece today detailing the massive amounts of money being prepared to be spent on the upcoming elections by organizations favourable to the GOP. The numbers are as shocking as the title of the piece says they are, with funds possibly reaching as high as $300 million, leaving Democrats scrambling to play catch up. The Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court is definitely rearing its ugly head in time for November.
As for Nevada, Harry Reid has been in trouble for some time now, although he is running against his dream opponent in the form of Tea Partier Sharron Angle who has been desperately trying to hide her past from the greater electorate. President Obama will be making his second trip to the state for Harry Reid this year, stumping for his re-election campaign which has been looking up since Ms. Angle has publicly called the separation of church and state as unconstitutional, wants to kill social security and medicare, and being against abortion in all cases said that women who were raped and became pregnant should turn lemons into lemonade.
In any event, campaign season is hitting its stride while Congress is on its fourth of July break, even while there's still lots of work to be done. The fortunes of the Democrats could have been much worse than they are now however, after repeated gaffs from GOP members like Rep. Joe Barton apologizing to BP and RNC Chairman Michael Steel's most recent comments publicly disagreeing with the majority GOP position on Afghanistan. The GOP being the GOP is keeping things competitive while Democrats like Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson vote against extending unemployment benefits hamstring his own parties efforts.
The real question is whether or not the White House can get its message out in time to swing vulnerable districts their way by November. Although, it is much more likely that jobs numbers will do more to help one party over another when it comes time to vote.
