Tories Unveil New Immigration Consultant Act
Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney unveiled the government's new immigration law, Bill C35 which they are touting as a crackdown on crooked immigration consultants who prey on hopeful immigrants.
The Minister said that the act would give the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism the power to appoint an oversight body to regulate consultants and the immigration industry as a whole. He thanked NDP MP Olivia Chow for her tireless work on behalf of immigrants who were victims of corrupt immigration consultants.
These so called ghost consultants reputedly charge incredibly high rates for assistance with the immigration process, all while promising things they can't deliver like high paying jobs. The new rules would impose a maximum fine of $50,000 and 2 years in prison for those consultants who defraud their clients.
