Obama On Oil Spill From Pensacola
President Obama in a preview of his speech tonight from the oval office spoke from an naval air base in Pensacola Florida on the Gulf oil spill.
Speaking to an audience of men and women in uniform, the President touted what he called the largest response and cleanup in the history of the United States, thanking those 27 thousand plus people involved in the cleanup and effort to stop the leak. Once again he promised that the Gulf would be restored and reassured Americans that they could feel safe to go and vacation in the Gulf, specifically mentioning that restaurant seafood was safe to eat. This is the second day in a row that the President has been actively marketing the tourism industry for the Gulf states and is apparently most welcome by businesses affected by the disaster.
In an attempt to lift spirits and to connect the struggle with the Gulf of Mexico oil crisis to the nation's two foreign wars, the President took some time to speak to the troops about their ongoing military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. He received hearty cheers and applause when he announced that the plan to withdraw from Iraq is on pace for the end of this summer and promised to support service members for their sacrifices. The feeling was that while they would support the troops for all of their sacrifices, they would also support those Americans being affected by the domestic oil leak crisis. His message was that they were all Americans and that they wouldn't turn their backs on anyone.
He ended his speech with a new sense of optimism not seen since the administration was able to help pass health reform. It appears that the President is ready for a major push to make sure an oil spill such as this never happens again.
