Inflation 1.4% in May
In the year from May 2009 to May 2010 the consumer spending index was 1.4%, down from the year's April rate of 1.8%.
Again it was energy prices leading the way with a 6.2% increase from May 2009 to May 2010, following a 9.8% increase for the year in May. Of all the costs affecting consumers, transportation costs exerted the heaviest pressure rising 4.1% in May, after rising 6.2% in April. On top of that, insurance premium costs increased 5.1% for passenger vehicles in May.
Of the eight major indices tracked by Stats Canada the only two to fall marginally in May were costs for clothing and footwear, and recreation, education and reading.
