Possible Election Averted

Members of Parliament and the government have reached a deal with respect to how the secret Afghan detainee documents will be shown.

A deal needed to be reached by 1:30 this afternoon or a motion of contempt of Parliament was expected to filed, which in turn could have led to an election if the government decided that it was a confidence vote.   Previously, the Speaker of the House Peter Milliken ruled that MP's and the government had until this past Wednesday to reach a deal, but granted an extension of two days to encourage cooperation.

The plan is too have one MP from each party take an oath and together they will look at the documents and decide which documents they would like released and if there is a dispute, a three arbiter panel of jurists will decide what, if anything needs to be redacted or summarized so as not to compromise national security and the safety of Canadian troops.
