The president of the European Union Commission wants Canada to ease its opposition to an international tax on banks, arguing it's in Canada's interest to ensure an emergency fund is in place in the event of a future financial meltdown.

The issue is shaping up as a key point of contention heading in to next month's G20 and G8 meetings, which take place in Toronto and Muskoka.
