Unemployment Steady At 9.7 Percent
The number of unemployed remained the same at around 15 million people in March, even though there was an increase in hiring of 162,000 people for the same month. At least 100,000 of the hires come from temporary positions due to the census so it is essentially another stagnant month of job growth in the United States.
The major unemployment groups based on sex and race haven't changed with 10% of adult men and 8% of adult women still being out of work, while blacks and Hispanics continue to have higher rates of unemployment at 16.5% and 12.6% respectively. Whites continue to have the lowest unemployment rate at 8.8% and teenagers have the highest numbers of unemployment coming in at 26.1%.
