Speaker Rules Against Government

Speaker of the House, Peter Milliken, ruled today that Parliament had the right to ask the government to release documents pertaining to the Afghan detainee scandal.

Originally the government refused to disclose thousands of underacted pages of documents on this issue, claiming national security and privilege issues prevented them from releasing any.  Even after the opposition successfully passed a motion in Parliament for the government to hand over the documents, the government refused.  The Speaker ruled that he couldn't agree with the government's position, as it seemed to him that it would infringe upon the the separation of powers.  The only question left, said Milliken, was to find a way to release the underacted documents to members of Parliament without sensitive information regarding national security leaking to the public.

As for the Prime Minister and his government, there has been no comment as of yet, but it is possible that they will take this political defeat in stride, or they could appeal to the Supreme Court (unlikely I think), or call an election.
