Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

President Obama went to North Carolina to speak to the employees of a company that manufactures component pieces for lithium ion batteries which took advantage of federal stimulus funds to expand and grow.  He went there to talk about jobs and the effect of the recession all across the country, specifically referring to the job numbers released today which saw over 160,000 jobs added to the economy in March 2010.

It has been over a year since the stimulus package passed Congress and went into effect, and the President is still in a position of having to sell it to the public.  Even though independent organizations have all found that the stimulus did indeed save upwards of 2 million jobs, as well as stabilizing state budgets all around the country.

The company he visited today received a $50 million investment from the Recovery Act, along with other companies across the nation, growing the entire battery industry in the U.S. from 2 percent of global production to a projected 40 percent of the global market in 5 years.  President Obama talked a lot about the green industry he was trying to foster, beginning with the stimulus package and further legislation passed earlier this year, asking the crowd to tell their friends that the stimulus really did do something tangible for them.

I think because of the nature of the industry where he was speaking lead to several environmental questions, including questions about his recent announcement of more offshore oil and gas drilling affecting further investment in the green industry.  In response, he once again detailed his multi-pronged approach to energy in the United States, stating that no one form of energy will be a solution to the nation's energy needs as they try to transition to a green economy over the next several decades.

In any event, jobs are a big deal, especially when you're struggling to pay the bills.  This isn't the first time the President has gone on the road to promote jobs growth and it almost certainly won't be the last opportunity he will take to tout his administration's successes while being understanding that the road back to acceptable levels of unemployment was going to be a long one.  He also, made it clear that government could only do so much to create jobs, saying that it was his job to help create the environment for job growth, but it was up to the private sector to be the ones hiring.
