UPDATE: Helena Guergis To Leave Cabinet
Helena Guergis, the embattled Minister of State for the Status of Women is leaving the cabinet, which will be announced by Prime Minster Steven Harper shortly.
She was in the news recently after having a very serious, very public melt down in PEI at an airport, as was her husband when the Toronto Star broke a story that Mr. Jaffer was boasting of his ability to get government contracts for his clients, saying that he could "open the Prime Minister's office."
It's not clear yet if she resigned or was fired, but we'll bring you more when the Prime Minister makes the announcement.
UPDATE: The Prime Minister announced that that Ms. Guergis offered her resignation and he accepted, but when asked if he asked for a resignation he said that under the circumstances she had to go. Going one step farther, the Prime Minister banned her from any caucus meetings and asked that an ethics probe be initiated as well as an RCMP investigation. He refused to comment on Mr. Jaffer, only saying that any suggestion that Mr. Jaffer had an open door to the Prime Minister's office was false.
The duties Guergis was responsible for in her portfolio will now be transferred to conservative MP Rona Ambrose for the time being, until a suitable replacement can be found. Watch the Prime Minister below:
