UPDATE: Arizona Gov Signs Crappy Immigration Bill Into Law

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, announced that she will sign an incredibly controversial immigration bill that passed the state Senate by a vote of 17 to 11.

The bill calls for police and other law enforcement members to stop anyone who looks to be an illegal immigrant.  The only requirement to be stopped and asked for identification papers will be what someone looks like, or if you like, what will actually happen is that police officers will be stopping people with a certain skin colour.  The bill doesn't address immigration, it targets minorities.

It is a recipe for disaster, but shockingly the bill has 70% approval in Arizona, which I'm sure is a major reason for Republican Governor Brewer to sign the bill.  That, and because she is an unelected governor seeking to run for governor at the midterms, taking the position when former Governor, and current Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano left office.  Not only will lead to police harassing actual citizens, this will inevitably lead to the alienation of entire groups of people through the use of racial profiling.  This law is completely absurd and there will be several lawsuits filed, first to block implementation of the law, and secondly to be eventually struck down as unconstitutional in the Supreme Court, if it makes it that far.

It's been said before, but what is needed is federal immigration reform and not a state by state solution.  If immigration reform for the Obama administration was going to slip into next year at any point, that is certainly not the case anymore because this issue is going to spread like wildfire.

UPDATE: I just received an email from a gentleman from Newsy.com linking me a video of analysis of the media attention this issue is receiving, and I have to say that it was really good.
