Canada is sounding a rare criticism of Israel after news of plans to build a housing project in disputed East Jerusalem.

"Canada believes that all parties should abide by their international commitments," Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said in a statement Thursday. "This announcement does not advance the cause of peace in the region."
