Inflation Up 1.9 Percent
The overall Consumer Price Index was up 1.9% in January 2010, from January 2009, primarily because of gasoline prices. Gas prices rose 23.9% from January 2009, on top of a 25.6% rise from December 2009.
Overall, energy prices rose 8.2%, as well as 6 of the 8 major components of the overall CPI. Transportation costs were the biggest risers, not just because of gasoline costs, but because of a 3.1% rise in the costs of a vehicle, and a 7.7% increase in insurance premiums.
The only two categories to fall were shelter, and clothing and footware.
