Today the world's newest and tallest building officially opened, coming in at 828 metres, or 2626 feet.  Originally called the Burj Dubai, the building has been renamed Burj Khalifa Bin Zayed after the president of the United Arab Emirates and now supplants Taiwan's Taipei 101, which had been the world's tallest skyscraper at 1,670 feet. 

Investors in Emaar Properties who developed the building and the surrounding land in Dubai hope that it signals a return to better days for business in the region considering shares in the company have dropped in excess of 80 percent since the world wide economic and housing collapse.
