Taliban insurgents were able to penetrate security in Kabul and began a firefight in a burning shopping mall while others blew themselves up in various areas of the city.  Apparently the target was to seize government buildings, but failing that they decided to cause as much terror as possible before they were killed.  President Hamid Karzai released a statement after the battle saying, "The security situation is under control and order has once again been restored."
