NYT: Accord Reached On Insurance Tax For Costly Plans

After days of intense negotiations between Democratic members of the House, Senate, Labour leaders, and the White House, an agreement on one of the biggest sticking points has been reached.  In the Senate version of the Healthcare bill, the mechanism to generate revenue to pay for the soon to be added millions of previously uninsured people, was a tax on what is commonly known as Cadillac helathcare plans.  This plan was favoured by the President, but was generally panned by labour leaders and House Democrats because it would affect union workers who buy into these large plans.  However, after many hours of negotiating, House and Labour leaders have agreed to a more modest version of the Cadillac tax plan which would see the majority of the tax delayed until 2017 as well as a reduction in the overall amount of tax on these plans.
