The Holiday Grind

For those of you still struggling to get all of your shopping, cooking, baking, and organizing done for the holidays I have a suggestion to you.  Sit back, relax, and do nothing with your friends and family.

I went out a couple of days ago to buy a book for one last person in my family and watched in shock at all of the screaming, begging kids, stressed out parents, and other types of people filling bags and shopping carts full of crap to give to other people in the hopes of getting crap in return.  I didn't see any cheer on anyone's face as they trudged along, which leads me to ask the question, what the hell is everyone doing?

Why are we buying tons of crap for people who already have tons of crap, which if it's anything like the houses I've seen, isn't a stretch of the imagination?  Without naming names to protect their delicate sensibilities, I'm aware of many families who have bought their kids so much crap over the years (yes I'm guilty of it to) that they don't even remember what they have to play with, let alone the time to use all of it.

Anyway, despite my misgivings on the role consumerism has played in corrupting, not only the holidays, but also western society in general, I'm going to enjoy the fact that it is a really slow news time of the year so I'll be able to relax a bit and take some time to bake some goodies to entertain.

Oh, and for those among you who actually adhere to religious observances I hope you too enjoy your holidays, even though you're slightly delusional for worshipping figments of your imagination.

Happy Holidays and be sure to watch A Colbert Christmas!
