Supreme Court Rules On Manslaughter Verdict
The Supreme Court of Canada has overturned the Manslaughter conviction of Stephanie Bird and instead found her guilty of 1st degree murder for which she will go to jail for life with no chance of parole for 10 years.
The case involves a horrible event from 2005 in Edmonton, Alberta where 5 individuals lured 13 year old Nina Courtepatte away from her home and took her to a golf course where she was raped twice and bludgeoned to death. Stehpanie was originally convicted of manslaughter for restraining Courtepatte while she was assaulted and hitting her with a wrench because she testified that she had a change of heart and walked back to the car with another girl. However, the law in Canada says to legally have a change of heart you have to tell others about it, which is why the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the appeal put forward by Canadian prosecutors.
