In what is being called unprecedented for that part of the world, Mexico City has given full marital rights to same sex couples which includes benefits as well as the right to adopt. 

Supporters broke out in cheers and David Razu, a legislator from the left-wing Social Democratic Party who promoted the law told Reuters, "We are putting an end to segregation and stigmatization of a sector of society, giving access to full marriage rights."

Predictably, the Catholic church and its local leaders are furious and are saying that the bill will destroy families and promote immorality, although the lack of evidence for this assertion is not something that that they are worried about.  The church and other conservative activists are sure to lobby the Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard to veto the bill, but it doesn't look good for the forces of the past, considering that the mayor has been a supporter of liberal voices in the city as was evidenced by his support for abortion in some cases when before there was none.

This is a huge victory for those who support same sex marriage, especially for those in the United States who have had a couple of bad years and saw their marriage ballot propositions fail in both California and Maine.
