Reuters: Gates, EU Leaders Say Iran To Face New Sanctions

Coming on the heels of tentative progress with between North Korea and high ranking US envoys getting back to nuclear talks, Secretary of Defence Robert Gates and EU leaders have now called for new "significant" sanctions on Iran because of its nuclear program.  "I think you're going to see some significant additional sanctions imposed by the international community, assuming that the Iranians don't change course and agree to do the things they signed up to do at the beginning of October," Gates said.

The deal pursued by western officials was one where Iran would transport low enriched uranium to other countries like France and Russia for further enrichment to be used in Iran's domestic nuclear power plants. However, Iran has recently announced a
huge expansion of its current enrichment facilities which has caused a breakdown from earlier promising progress toward an acceptable international resolution to fears of nuclear proliferation in the region.
