Found on the Orders of the Day page of the official House of Commons website is an NDP motion proposed by MP Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre) which states, "That, in the opinion of the House, the government should, in accordance with Part 1 of the Inquiries Act, call a Public Inquiry into the transfer of detainees in Canadian custody to Afghan authorities from 2001 to 2009."

Debate began on this particular motion this morning and the back and forth had a familiar ring to it.  Opposition members repeatedly asked for a public inquiry because they felt that question period and committee meetings weren't adequate citing the fact that the government won't release certain documents while noting underacted portions of those same documents were leaked to members of the press.  In response the members of the government continued to ask why the opposition couldn't take the word of generals who were on the ground in Afghanistan that they never had reason to suspect anyone was being tortured after they transferred prisoners to Afghan intelligence agents.

What is different today however, was that Bob Rae (Toronto Centre) pointed out the responsibility that the previous Liberal government, as well as the current Conservative government, would have to take if any evidence was uncovered during a public inquiry.  Additionally, several prominent international NGO's like the Red Cross were said to have been sounding the alarm bells for quite some time in Afghanistan, although they were only able to voice those concerns to the Afghan government.

Will this motion go anywhere?  Only if the Conservative effort to change the topic fails or if anyone gives a crap and calls their MP.
