Question Period Heats Up
With the confirmation this morning of the revelations that Canadian Diplomat Richard Colvin did indeed send reports to high placed government officials including then Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay about possible Afghan detainee torture after prisoners were handed over to the Afghan intelligence service, question period in Parliament was sure to be fiery. The major problem for the conservatives was that they had denied receiving any reports prior to last week.
True to form and when there is a scandal within any government, this issue was at the top of the list of questions asked beginning with the leader of the opposition Liberals, Michael Ignatieff. The questions were generally brushed off and at one point the Prime Minister ducked a question about when he knew about the situation and said that it was an insult to Canadian soldiers. As for the former Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay, he decided to blame the previous Liberal government for leaving them with a bad situation in Afghanistan also ducking the question.
