It's Not About The Troops
Last week, I wrote an article about the Conservatives dodging questions on the Afghan detainee scandal during question period, with John Baird (Ottawa West-Nepean) leading the charge in his over the top disgust at the official opposition and the "shameful" way they were speaking about the troops.
This week, the attacks have seem to sunk in for the opposition as I was able to catch Bob Rae (Toronto Centre) and Ujjal Dosanjh (Vancouver South) making comments on the same subject, but this time their comments and the inevitable follow up questions revolved around the Liberals pushing back against suggestions that they weren't supporting the troops.
The Liberal members of parliament reiterated their call for a full public inquiry, saying that they wouldn't get answers either in question period or in committee. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has refused to release any more documents citing national security and that its somehow insulting to the troops. That hasn't stopped the opposition from hammering away during question period and in the absence of the information they say they need, at least they can keep the story alive.
I'm not sure if this political hot potato will have the legs to last into the new year, although I hope it does because if we somehow contributed to the torture of innocent civilians we have to know and never let it happen again, but if it does then maybe Canadian politics won't be as boring this year to watch and analyze.
