The Globe & Mail has an excellent article about the release of two journalists, Canadian Amanda Lindout and Australian Nigel Brennan, held captive in Somalia for 15 months.  Amanda's family decided to re-mortgage their house and hire a private security firm to pay the kidnappers and finally release their daughter and her colleague.
