David Vitter Defends His Vote Against Protecting Rape Victims

David Vitter (R) from Louisiana showed up on YouTube at a local event where he was challenged by a woman who said she was a rape victim.  It was only a month ago when he and 29 other Republican Senators voted against an amendment for the 2010 Defense Appropriations bill proposed by Senator Al Franken, which would withhold defense contracts from companies, "if they restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court.

The amendment was spurred on because of a case involving Jamie Leigh Jones who was gang-raped by 4 men that she worked with at Haliburton/KBR in Baghdad and held captive when she was going to report them.

Senator Vitter's defense much like the rest of the men who voted against the Franken amendment was that they were concerned about the ability of the courts and government to modify private contracts.

Mr. Vitter is up for re-election in 2010 and this story might just stick around long enough to cause him problems.
