A Travesty As Big As Texas

The Texas Longhorns look to be on their way to the National Title Game in US college  football and like it or not, there is little that can be done to stop them now.

The Horns face Texas A&M tonight as more than a 3 touchdown favourite, and barring a colossal upset will go on to face Nebraska in the Big 12 title game where they will be heavily favoured.  Texas has coasted through their schedule this year, catching breaks along the way like Oklahoma losing a standout QB Sam Bradford early on in the Red River shootout and catching usually strong opponents in Missouri and Kansas in down years.

You can't fault the Longhorns for their schedule, but you can fault the process, which is going to see teams like TCU and Boise State most likely going undefeated and left at the alter like a jaded bride.  Not to mention the loser of the Alabama/Florida game who will get a lovely invitation to a bowl they will have no interest in for their hard work this year.

The system is flawed and that is denied by very few these days.  The need for some sort of playoff is long overdue.  The arguments for the lesser lights like Boise and TCU not playing hard enough schedules is not going to fly anymore and they continue to take on BCS schools (and win) more and more each year.

The old guard will also argue that a playoff takes away from teh intensity of the regular season where it is said that there is a playoff game every week, but that gets a little hard to swallow this time of year when we are faced  with the prospects of 2 or 3 more than qualified title contenders viewing life from the Sheraton Hawaii bowl, or one of the other 30 some odd meaningless money grabs that will be dumped on us over the next month or so.

How good would a 4 team playoff be right now with so many worthy teams in the mix?  Alas, we will never know and once again we will be left to wonder what might have been if the Broncos or Horned Frogs got their shot at the crystal.  Maybe it's for the best, because teams like Utah and Boise from non-BCS conferences like the Mountain West and the WAC don't have  a prayer against powerhouse programs like Alabama and Oklahoma in big bowl games...right?
